FAQ

GENERAL QUESTIONS

What is Camp Improv Utopia
Camp Improv Utopia is a three-night cabin-style camping experience for improvisers 21 and over.  The camp takes place over 3 nights and is filled with workshops, camping events, team building, campfires, stories, performances and more since 2011. Our camps have you take four skilled based workshops from top instructors while our Yosemite camp has you take one instructor the entire weekend and you learn an improv form they are a master of. *Our Ireland Retreat does not take place at a camp. Rather an indoor facility with bunk beds, bathrooms and workshop areas.
How much prior improv experience do I need?
For our East, West and Ireland camp no improv is required. Yosemite Camp you should be at least intermediate to get the most out of it. You are doing forms and need to have at least and intermediate level of improv. We have had all walks of life at camp from never having done improv to the most skilled of improvisers. All events and workshops will work with all levels of experience. However, camp is not for everyone there are hills and bunk style accommodations. It’s not a hotel, it’s a summer camp. We do not allow off-site lodging.
Allergies of dietary needs?
The staff is committed to helping any camper with a food allergy or dietary need have a great time at camp. Whether you’re a meat eater, vegetarian, or vegan we got you covered. Although we do recommend vegans bring their favorite snacks. The facilities we rent are dedicated to working around many allergies and dietary needs. When registering just make sure to list your food allergies or dietary requirements and we’ll do our best to work with you.
Co-ed and single-sex cabins/rooms
We will have co-ed cabins and single-sex cabins, please let us know if you want to be in a single-sex cabin if you don't let us know we will assume you don't mind either way. Again, if you have any special requests, early to bed, bottom bunk etc. Let us know upon registration or e-mail us.
What about my car?
Yes, there is parking. We encourage you carpool if you can to help save room and the environment.
Can I just come for workshops and not camp?
We do not allow any outside attendees. If you register for IU you must stay on premises. Improv Utopia is an experience and it is our mission to provide everyone who attends the chance to have community, camaraderie in nature.
Do you have to stay at camp or can you get a hotel?
We do not allow outside lodging. The Improv Utopia experience is unique and we do not allow any off camp sleeping arrangements. If you find that you do not want to sleep at camp, this may not be the experience for you. But we hope it is, because it's totes fun!
Typical Improv Utopia Schedule
Activities and shows for campers will start on Friday night. you can arrive at camp at 4 p.m. with dinner usually starting around 6p then events/shows all evening. Saturday and Sunday are workshops (Yosemite workshops start on Friday evening) and Monday there are not activities just breakfast and saying your goodbyes. Campers must vacate before 11 a.m. There are AM and PM sessions during Saturday and Sunday, with a huge break in the middle of the day for camp activities, elective workshops (Only if offered/and which camp you're attending) and more! Evenings we do jams, shows, activities, parties and more!
How do I become a teacher at one of your camps?
We select teachers from all over the world. You can submit your workshops and resume to nick@improvutopia.com. We look for master teachers who have at least 7 years experience performing and teaching. Teachers we've had in the past are Susan Messing, Craig Cackowski, Joe Bill, Jill Bernard and many more.
How do I become a Camp Counselor?
We select the counselors for each camp there is not application process. Our East, Ireland and West camps all require counselors. Our Yosemite camps does not.

HOW DOES OUR WAITLIST WORK?

How will I know when I get off the wait list?
You will receive an notification from the Camp Network titled "Improv Utopia: Wait List Update", in that notification is the link to update and claim your spot by registering. If you are on the wait list for multiple camps, once you click to register it will tell you at the top of the form which camp or Yosemite focus you are being offered a spot for. Your spot won't be secured until you finish the registration process.
What are my chances of getting off the wait list?
Your chances are great! Especially if you are a new camper. You can help us by letting us know in the comments when you sign up if this is your first time, whether you reside outside of the United States and if you want to be considered for last minute cancellations. Most often we will go through our entire wait list, especially when looking for last minute campers. If you don't make it in this year, you will be notified when future camps open, giving you the upper edge and in some cases, early registration opportunities.
Is the waitlist free to get on?
Yes it is. Sign up and you will only be charged if you get an invitation and you accept. You can pass up your spot as well and you will not be charged. For Yosemite, you can sign up for multiple waitlists if you want.

COVID-19

Covid-19 Guidelines - East Camp
Our COVID-19 GUIDELINES FOR CAMP
  1. VACCINATIONS REQUIRED: All Campers must be vaccinated. As of right now that’s the case, we have only about a few people that haven’t checked in, we still have about six people that haven’t turned it in yet, but we assume they will. Folks who are not vaccinated or do not turn in vaccination proof will not be permitted to camp.
  2. COVID TESTING BEFORE CAMP: We will require a NEGATIVE COVID TEST from you to show us when you pull up to the gate. Please wear a mask when arriving. Please take the test up to 72 hours before you come to camp, has to be within that range. Can’t be past that. We will also try to get some Rapid Covid Tests for onsite. If for some reason you forgot, or couldn’t get it, we may be able to test you onsite and get results in 15 minutes. However, there is a cost to you for this option, we highly recommend you get it before you come to camp for free. Our rapid test will be more for emergencies. You can get tests for free in your state or you can get an at home test in your local pharmacy, or CVS, Walgreens for a cost. You can even find them on Amazon. I think they’re around $25-30. If for some reason you cannot afford to do the test, or something comes up, please contact jacque@improvutopia.com and we will assist you. ***Rapid Testing is not a guarantee, we are still working on having that at camp so best case is to get it done before you come.
  3. TROUT LAKE RESORTS: The camp we rent, their employees are all required to be vaccinated and the cooks wear masks as well.
  4. Trout lake has always used hospital grade sanitation to clean all their facilities and cabins, which is above what is asked. This has been even before COVID. I know these people, they don’t mess around and they love their camp and grounds they take it seriously. They have had kids all summer and have had no COVID cases. This camp is on it and accredited. To be accredited they have to follow strict rules and guidelines.
  5. TENTS AT CAMP: Trout Lake has informed us, that due to insurance issues, we cannot have outside tents.
  6. Our cabins hold up to 18-20 folks, we have them normally around ½ capacity already.
  7. We will recommend you wear masks at camp or if weather is good we can do some more classes outside, however we know you’re sleeping together and that’s not feasible to wear masks in those spaces.
  8. If you feel at all sick. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO CAMP. If you provide documentation about your COVID Positive diagnosis we will credit you for a future camp.
  9. Once you’re at camp, unless it’s an emergency, we will ask you to stay on premises and not go anywhere outside the grounds. This is to help keep us all safe. If you need a blanket, towel or something. We will send a CIU Staff member to get it for you as we plan to make trips. You will just Venmo them or we will figure that out and make a run. Therefore, bring everything you’ll need to camp. You can find a list here: https://www.improvutopia.com/faq/
  10. At this point we have to follow our cancellation policy as we are already paid up at the camp and cannot offer any refunds. The only exception would be that, if you had or tested positive for COVID-19 we would issue a credit to next year. We are a non-profit and try to keep our prices low to cover our costs. Being transparent, East camp costs us a considerable amount and we have to pay with camp based on your reservation and it would be a huge loss for us as we cannot get any of that back as of this point.
  11. We know with COVID-19 nothing will ever be 100%, but we are going to do our best to stop the spread of it. You assume any risk while coming to camp, however we are doing our best to do our part and keep you safe.
  12. Stoudsburg, PA County, Monroe County, has very low in COVID transmission rate right now.
  13. For your information: CDC Information on recommendations: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html
I know this puts some burden on you, however once we have arrived safely we promise to have a safe and fun events like usual. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. It’s important that you do your part in helping us create a safe environment here at camp.
COVID-19 - Guidelines - Yosemite Camp
Dear Campers,   Thank you for your patience as we try to navigate the Delta Variant and update our COVID-19 policies. I want to be upfront and transparent with you all as I have since the beginning of the pandemic. Camp Yosemite will go forward as planned unless the government or state shuts it down, which doesn't look like we are heading in that direction. At camp this year we have a REGISTERED NURSE/MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL that will attend and help anyone in need and also follow and enforce any COVID-19 guidelines. I did research, chatted with our camps, and other summer camps and what they are doing and how it has been going. This e-mail is to inform you of how we intend to make this the safest place possible for you so here is our updated COVID-19 information. I thank you in advance for looking this over and helping us create a safe environment for all.
  1. VACCINATIONS REQUIRED: All Campers are required to be vaccinated to come.
  2. COVID TESTING BEFORE CAMP: We will require a NEGATIVE COVID TEST from you to show us when you pull up to the gate. Please wear a mask when arriving. We will have mask available to campers. If for some reason you forgot, or couldn’t get it, we may be able to test you onsite and get results in 15 minutes. You can get tests for free in your state or you can get an at home test in your local pharmacy, or CVS, Walgreens for a cost. You can even find them on Amazon. Binax Now is a good take home test that we recommend and you can take that the day of camp if you want we will accept that. Takes only 15 minutes and our nurse can help administer it for you so it's as accurate as possible. I think they’re around $25-30. If for some reason you cannot afford to do the test, or something comes up, please contact jacque@improvutopia.comand we will assist you.
  3. Temperature Checks will happen upon registration.
  4. Calvin Crest: The camp we rent, their employees that will be taking care of us that weekend will be vaccinated and the cooks wear masks as well.
  5. Calvin Crest has always sanitized all cabins, tables, bathrooms etc to clean all their facilities and cabins, which is above what is asked. They didn’t have their full camps this year so not a lot of folks have been there. No covid cases reported from Calvin Crest. These folks have always been honest with me and make their rentals or anything be vaccinated and tested before coming.
  6. TENTS AT CAMP: Calvin Crest allows outside tents if you feel more comfortable with that option. There is no price adjustment for this, however some campers had asked about it.
  7. Our cabins hold up to 4 folks on each side so 8 total but it’s separate with a door in the middle so 4 campers per side.
  8. We will RECOMMEND you wear masks at camp. However we know you’re sleeping together and that’s not feasible to wear masks in those spaces. Do what you feel is comfortable.
  9. If you feel at all sick. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO CAMP. If you provide documentation about your COVID Positive diagnosis we will credit you for a future camp.

Therefore, bring everything you’ll need to camp. We ask that if you do leave that you wear a mask and stay socially distanced. We understand you will be going to Yosemite but for the most part that is all outside. You can find a list here: https://www.improvutopia.com/faq/
